![]() ![]() Split lighting illuminates half of the subject’s face and leaves the other half dark. It’s common for portrait lighting because it tends to be flattering for everyone. Short lighting adds a slight shadow to the side of the subject’s face that’s turned toward the camera. Rembrandt lighting leaves half of the subject’s face almost completely dark, aside from a small triangle of light under the eye. Loop lighting places the light just above eye level, creating a loop-shaped shadow on the subject’s cheek, alongside their nose. Butterfly Lightingīutterfly lighting places the light source above and behind the camera, creating a butterfly-shaped shadow under the subject’s nose. Broad Lightingīroad lighting casts a slight shadow on the side of the subject’s face that’s turned away from the camera. You may find below the balanced result of 3 ambiances we discussed plus accent layer. ![]() So we'll add this layer on top of our chosen ambiance layer using lighting control we adjust the light level of each layer to come up with the final result. The right image is accent layer (we'll discuss this further in the next post) that highlight the plant, cushion and center table. For illustration in this post, we choose a layer light that pick up some interior element. Once the ambiance layer is created, then we shall add the other layer. Not as flat as the previous ambiances, but still eligible as ambiance layer. The nature of downlight creates stronger shadows and fill up 70% of the room volume. We selected downlight that meet the balance between function (to create soft wide beam light) and discreet look (small fixtures, small aperture and minimum glare). The third ambiance came from pair of wide beam downlight. Note that there is no highlight on the wall. The second ambiance was created by direct linear light ( LINS linear strip + diffuse housing, which create softer and more even ambiance. You may want to move the cove further from the wall to prevent this highlight. Note the highlight on the wall, due to closeness of ceiling cove to the wall and the nature of indirect light distribution. Shadows are soft, which is preferable to add dimensions of objects despite of flat lighting. The most common technique: cove light / indirect light ( LINS linear strip + open aluminum housing ) creates smooth ambiance layer that evenly fill the room volume. The possibilities are endless, but we'll discuss in this post 3 typical ways to achieve light ambiance layer. It means light must fill the volumeof the room. Note that ambiance light requires even light distribution for both horizontal and vertical plane. Basically we must create relatively flat lighting, evenly distributed. For girls, this may be easier to understand :) because you may consider ambiance layer as the foundation of your make up. The first layer, which is the most important one, is ambiance light. Different composition / different balance creates different scenes. A nice light ambiance is created then by balancing those layers. The secret of lighting design lies on creating layers of light. ![]()
